What is a Point Cloud?

A Point Cloud is a digital cloud made of points captured by the laser scanner used by a building surveyor. Each time the laser hits a solid surface, it registers a coloured point with geospatial data embedded.

When all the scans for a specific site are federated, it results into a digital copy of the site made of single points, in other words a Point Cloud. This Point Cloud is then exported in a specific format (E57) which can be imported in 3D modeling software.

Why should you use Point Clouds?

Point Cloud surveys are now the most efficient way for designers to stay in control of the production and management of the information. The Point Cloud is the single source of truth used to build your BIM model.

As opposed to traditional 2D or 3D survey information, Point Cloud survey information includes all the details of the existing site, including 360° photos. Instead of the assumptions being made by the building surveyor, you can make your own assumptions when building your BIM model.

You can also always go back to the Point Cloud to double check an assumption or detail further your BIM model depending on the design stage.

Point Cloud to BIM modeling

We provide point cloud to BIM services. We liaise with the surveyor to get the quotes you need to get your site surveyed. The surveyor then provides us with the E57 format. We then use the E57 format to produce the BIM model of the existing site in Archicad following the NBS LOD standard of your choice.
